Intel's Arrandale processors for ultra-thin notebooks outed

intel-logoIntel's upcoming Arrandale processors for ultra-thin notebooks have been revealed and these new 32nm dual-core processors will carry the Core i7 and Core i5 brands. This is like to just add to the confusion for the notebook buying public, as there will be several different types of Arrandale processors carrying the same branding.

The first three processors will be the Core i7 640UM, the Core i7 620UM and the Core i5 520UM. The U in the model name should represent ultra low power, while the other series of Arrandale processors will carry either the LM or M suffix. The UM processors should be rated at 18W, with the LM at 25 and the M at 35W.

The Core i7 640UM will be clocked at a mere 1.2GHz, with the Core i7 620UM and the Core i5 520UM both coming in at an even lower 1.06GHz. The Core i7 models feature Hyper Threading and all three models offers integrated graphics. The advantage of putting the graphics inside the CPU core on a notebook is that it makes it easier for the notebook manufacturer to create a low-cost but efficient cooling solution, as there's only one hot-spot inside the notebook.

The processors are said to be priced at $305 (€205), $278 (€187) and $241 (€162) respectively and all three models should launch some time in the first half of next year. They are set to replace some of Intel's Core 2 Duo SU models and the SU9600 is set to be phased out at the time of the launch of the three new models.
